Constipation

In older adults constipation is more common that may be due to a number of contributing factors.

These may be:

  • Having a low fibre diet

  • Not drinking enough fluids

  • Lack of physical activity

  • Medications (diuretics and Iron supplements) and,

  • Medical conditons (diabetes and irritable bowel syndrome)

How to relieve constipation:

Eat a healthy, high fibre diet and drink lots of fluids. For information on healthy eating click ‘here’ or make an appointment with your local dietitian.

Go for a walk, do some gardening, go for a swim do any fun activities and make it a part of your daily routine. This may help in preventing constipation and will also improve your overall health.

Don’t ignore the urge to go to the toilet. This is important because if you holding these urges for too long can cause constipation.
